Sunday, September 9, is the first day of Lyle's hike. The weather was good in the morning so he got started early. He hiked about a mile on the trail and decided to turn around and go back to his car to get rid of more weight out of his pack. He eliminated about 4 lbs. and headed back out on the trail. The pack felt much better!
He came across a group of bird watchers who were documenting and observing the hawk migration. We had no idea that hawks migrated! He enjoyed this part of the trail. There are lots of people on the trail which will be common on weekends in the fall. I'm glad he is around so many people...it gives me a sense of comfort that there are people that can help if something goes wrong.
Lyle hiked 13.5 miles and set up his tent in a camping area. He is the only camper in this area. There is no bear pole but he did find a good, solid branch in a tree about 15 feet above the ground. I finally had the courage to ask if any of the hikers he's talked with mentioned bears. The word they used was "active" but none of them had any interactions. Tomorrow's shelter has a bear box and they all said to be sure and use it. He is only going about 11.5 miles tomorrow and a little less than that the next day. He sounded so tired tonight so the shorter days will be good. I think that he will sleep really well tonight.
I had to give him the bad news that the Packers lost, but he took it fairly well. Hopefully the Thursday night game against the Bears will go better.
