Sunday, September 23 is a beautiful day after the storms of the night before. Of course it started out wet but at least he didn't have to hike in the rain. He has a choice to make today of staying at the shelter at 10 miles or 20 miles or camp at the sites in between. He wants to make enough miles to allow him to get to Salisbury CT by Monday afternoon. He is picking up his jump box and the winter sleeping bag I shipped to him...which he really needs now. The nights have become very cold and his emergency blanket isn't working anymore either. And there are rooms for rent so he can have a bed, shower, do laundry, have a very large hot meal and hopefully watch the Monday night Packer game. Now that's incentive! The trail is still very rocky with lots of ups and downs...and not any pansy ups and downs either. And to top it all off he has to ford a stream because the sign says that rock hopping is too dangerous and is not allowed. So he has to stop and put on his camp shoes to keep his boots dry. Boy was that cold! He spent most of the day hiking with a group of 4 others but by nighfall he was by himself again. He makes 15 miles and has a nice campsite for the night...and he is by himself again. There was a couple with a dog that stopped in for a look but kept going. According to his calculations he has 11 miles to get into Salisbury so he should make it town in time to get settled for the game.
Monday morning is the coldest he has had so far. He finally rolled out of bed at 5 a.m. to break camp and get moving to get warm. He can't wait to get his winter bag as he says he will be plenty warm in it. The weather is going to be good again and he will call ahead at lunch to get a room. Even if there are a lot of ups and downs in this last stretch he should be able to make Sailsbury at a good time in the afternoon. And then he'll be out of CT in another day or so. A 0 day is definitely needed after all of these very long and rugged days.
