On Monday afternoon Lyle reached Salisbury with plenty of time to check into his rented room at a boarding house, shower, eat a good meal, resupply, do his laundry and get his box from the post office. He was thrilled that his room came with tv priviledges so he could watch the Monday Night Packers game. It was a treat to be able to watch the game but needless to say the outcome was not what we expected. Even though Lyle had a comfortable bed to sleep in he said he had trouble getting to sleep he was so worked up about the game! Luckily Tuesday is supposed to be a short day so he can sleep in. His hostess has told him he can leave when he is ready so he is hoping to sleep in and finish up some things before he heads out on the trail.
Tuesday's hike was actually longer than he planned because the trail was good. He decided to camp at one of the campsites between the two shelters. He saw very few hikers all day and ended up camping a a very nice campground all by himself. The campground had a bear box so there was no need to hunt for a tree to hang his food. The great news is that he crossed over into Mass. on Tuesday and has well over 1500 miles done on the trail. And it was another beautiful day for a hike. The trail has been good with not as many ups and downs as he had over the past few days. He also hiked up to a monument in honor of the highest peak in CT which is on the CT/MA state line. He really enjoyed having the sandwiches he bought before leaving Salisbury. And he was really warm all night in his tent with his winter sleeping bag. The day was so much better after Monday's night of sleep in a bed and some substantial meals--he was in really good spirits at the end of the day on Tuesday.
Wednesday morning he is waking up to rain. He was breaking camp in light showers when I spoke with him. He said he was almost too warm in his bag but slept like a rock all night. He sounded good and looking forward to more good trail in Mass.
