Saturday, September 15, is a wet morning. The rain passed through in the night so everyone was waking up with wet tents. Lyle was the first one up and out on the trail and by the time he called me, he was in an open rocky spot in the sun drying out his gear. A beautiful morning to sit and soak up some sun. Reception was not good all day so I wasn't able to get a lot of details. However, he did want me to wish his brother Gil Happy Birthday from the trail--happy birthday Gil because I know you are following this blog!
He finished the day with 16.5 miles completed which helped him cross the 1,400 mile mark on the trail. A red letter day as he called it! The disappointing part of the day was that when he reached the shelter tired and hungry, it was packed with Boy Scouts...no room in the Inn. So he went looking for a place to set up a tent and found a good spot on a ridge. He was going to invite his fellow hikers coming in behind him to join him. The challenge was no bear box near it and no tree to hang his food bag in. He was going to go back down to the site and look for room in the bear box near the shelter. I hope it worked for him. He tried to call me several times in the evening but all we had was garbled reception. I did hear something about "bear" but I'm trying not to get hysterical....
