Another rocky trail day in NJ and NY. Lyle spent the day crossing the state line which can be frustrating when you want to cross a state of your list! It was a good weather day but the trail was anything but easy and smooth. Bear interactions is still #1 on every hikers mind. In fact, as we were saying good morning Lyle stop mid-sentence and said he heard a very close, very loud crashing noise. He couldn't see anything but he said whatever it was it was making lots of noise. Of course I encouraged him to keep walking...quickly. Then the noise changed and he said it sounded like "it" was climbing a tree...had to be a bear and/or cubs. Thankfully this is one photo opportunity that he passed on!
Lyle has been seeing a lot of hikers...many more than we expected especially the south bounders. In fact he startled two ladies on the trail accidentally. He was on one side of the woods on the trail and the two ladies were on the other side of the woods. He heard one say "Are these rocks ever going to end?" and he responded loudly "no, they aren't" or something similar. When they made visual contact they told Lyle how surprised they were that there was another hiker so close. They are revisiting the trail after having through hiking it in 2006. They come back every year to do a short section to remind themselves what it was all about. Each to their own!
It was a tough 11.5 mile day so he was very happy to make it to the shelter. But good news he is in NY for good by the end of the day! And he was thrilled when I could tell him about the Packer victory. I also had to warn him about the rainy weather heading his way...hopefully it won't carry over into the day on Saturday. Scott and Now (SP?) caught up with him again so they are all enjoying the evenings together comparing notes and experiences.
